Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual or rhizomatous perennial herbs to sub-woody short-lived shrubs, glabrous or pubescent with simple, forked, stellate, or glandular hairs.

Leaves: Leaves simple, often geminate (occuring in pairs). Alternate. Blades linear to broadly ovate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary in the leaf axils or stem forks. Flowers bisexual (perfect), pedicellate. Calyx 5-lobed, the tube often inflated and angled. Corolla usually yellowish, often with dark spots toward base, campanulate to rotate with an expanded limb. Stamens 5; filaments inserted near base of corolla tube; anthers yellowish or bluish, oblong, opening by slits. Ovary superior, 2-celled; ovules numerous on an enlarged placenta; style 1, erect.

Fruit: Berries enclosed by the enlarged calyx tube; globose. Seeds numerous; lenticular. Usually self–compatible.
